Walmart to Remodel Over 650 Stores in 2026 as It Invests in Store Modernization

Store Upgrade Programme Expands Across the U.S.

Walmart plans to remodel more than 650 stores across the United States in 2026 as part of its ongoing investment in store modernisation and customer experience. The programme includes both Supercenters and Neighborhood Market locations, with upgrades concentrated in key retail markets.

Alongside the remodel programme, Walmart expects to open approximately 20 new stores during 2026 and early 2027, combining expansion with reinvestment in its existing footprint.

Expansion and Investment Reflect Long-Term Strategy

The remodel and expansion plans form part of a broader five-year initiative to develop or convert more than 150 large-format locations. Recent openings in states such as Florida and California, along with upcoming locations in Texas and North Carolina, highlight Walmart's continued focus on growth in high-demand regions.

This dual approach allows the retailer to optimise its store network while maintaining a pipeline of new locations.

Store Upgrades Focus on Layout, Merchandising and Experience

Remodelled stores will introduce wider aisles, updated layouts and improved merchandising displays designed to enhance navigation and product visibility. Exterior upgrades, including signage, parking and landscaping, are also being implemented to create a more consistent and modern store environment.

At the same time, Walmart is expanding product assortments and refining in-store presentation to better align with evolving customer expectations.

Stores Evolve into Omnichannel and Service Hubs

A key element of the upgrade programme is the integration of digital capabilities into physical stores. Walmart is expanding pickup and delivery services, including express options, while introducing digital touchpoints that connect in-store browsing with its broader online assortment.

Dedicated areas for fulfilling online grocery orders are also being enhanced, reinforcing the role of stores as fulfilment hubs.

In addition, service-focused departments such as pharmacies and vision centres are being upgraded with private consultation rooms, while Neighborhood Market locations are expanding deli and prepared food offerings to support convenience-driven shopping.

Faster Remodel Approach Reduces Disruption

Walmart is introducing a “rapid remodel” approach designed to accelerate store upgrades. Under this model, the main sales floor is temporarily closed for approximately four weeks while essential services such as pharmacies and fuel stations remain operational.

This condensed timeline allows the company to complete upgrades more efficiently while minimising disruption for customers.

Store Modernisation Becomes a Core Investment Priority

The scale of the programme highlights Walmart's continued focus on upgrading its physical retail infrastructure. Rather than relying solely on expansion, the retailer is prioritising improvements to existing locations to enhance efficiency, customer experience and operational flexibility.

As digital and physical channels become increasingly integrated, store modernisation is emerging as a key driver of long-term competitiveness.
